Mountain Getaway

Our good friends, Scott and Erika, invited us to their vacation home near Canaan Valley. What a wonderful weekend getaway for our family! On Friday afternoon, Erika and I packed her kids (Liam, Ethan and Fiona) and Meredith into the car and headed West. Three hours later, we were in the middle of the tiny mountain town of Thomas, West Virginia.

In the evening, Erika taught me the art of making cards ("stamping"). We shared a bottle of wine, chatted, and dug deep into our creativity to design colorful, heart-felt greeting cards. All the while, poor Erika had to encourage me to use straight lines (not such an easy task for one so craft-challenged!).

The guys arrived after a full day of work and a long drive. We spent a lovely weekend hiking, exploring, resting, and playing with the kids. After getting everyone settled Saturday night, the "grown-ups" fired up the grill, poured fresh drinks, and cooked 'smores on the front porch. (A very West Virginia way to escape a rainy evening!)

Meredith and Fiona had a lovely time playing together, even sharing a bedroom. However, since Meredith is in the early stages of sleeping in a "big girl bed," bedtime did not go smoothly! Who could blame her for being so excited -- a weekend full of adventure, a new bed, and a room with one of her favorite pals. Fortunately, we all got enough sleep to have a fabulous mountain getaway.

We hiked Table Rock Trail to discover an endless vista on an outcropping of rocks. It was terrifying to have the kids so close to the edge, but we took the chance to take a few photos.

Thank you, Erika and Scott! We always enjoy being with you and look forward to more time together!
