The sun shines bright in My Old Kentucky home,
'Tis summer, and people are gay;
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.
While I don't originate from Kentucky, nor do I have any family there, I do call a piece of it "home." Asbury College is a small Methodist school in the tiny town of Wilmore, about 15 miles south of Lexington. I was fortunate to spend 3 years of college in this blessed place, where I met many of my dearest friends. I don't get back often enough and never for very long. So, when the opportunity arose to attend a friend's wedding, I quickly planned a trip to the place I found so much happiness.
The bride was Mia Medlock, Paige's sister, meaning Paige also traveled to Wilmore for the event. Of course, Meredith wanted to join me to visit with her Godmother, "Fairy Paige." Frank greatly appreciates my Kentucky friends and joined us on the long drive (10 + hours, each way, with only one full day in between). Fortunately, both trips were uneventful and Meredith was a dream travel companion. A road tripper, just like her parents!
We were blessed to stay with my dear friend, Thomas, and his inspirational wife, Laura. She and I had only met twice prior, at one another's weddings, but we instantly connected and took advantage of the time to chat like girlfriends. Meredith also jumped right in to the scene, playing with Thomas and Laura's 3 adorable children, Andie (3 1/2) and twins, Rex and Eli (almost 2). Thank you, Browns, for opening your home to us. We miss you already!
Mia and Flip’s wedding was a beautiful celebration of love, God’s intention for marriage, and enduring friendship. Frank and I were honored to share their day. Since Mia is an Asbury alumna and her father was an art professor at the college for decades, I saw many familiar faces at the wedding. Thanks to Facebook, they weren't strangers from the past, but friends with whom I chat regularly.
After the wedding, several of us gathered for a great night of catching up and celebrating nearly 20 years of friendship! It was the first time I met my friends' husbands and children, and it was my opportunity to introduce my own family. Thanks, Hannah and Andy, for hosting us all in your new home; we loved initiating it with love and laughter!

My girlfriends and I wrapped up the weekend with breakfast that turned into brunch, thanks to the ever-tardy Vorndran clan. Then we drove back east while tears shamelessly streamed down my cheeks. I will always thank God for these life-long friends, family in my old Kentucky home.

New friends: Andie, Meredith, Eli, and Rex watching "The Wiggles."

Meredith practicing the monkey face Rex taught her. I love those monkey kisses!

I took several shots of Meredith with Hannah's son, Sam, each time asking Sam to smile. It wasn't until Meredith moved on and I prepared to walk away that I realized Sam's bum was stuck in the tree. Poor guy!

The (decidedly Right-leaning) View: Melissa, me, Paige, and Hannah. I love you girls!!
